Alicia Keys – The Element of Freedom

Alicia Keys has finally found love. The R&B/Soul superstar has often referenced themes of love found, lost, then found again over the last 8 years and 3 albums however, until now, Keys has never been involved in a serious relationship. Today, however, she is smitten with Hip-Hop super-producer Kaseem ‘Swizz Beatz’ Dean (Beyonce – Get Me Bodied; Eve – Tambourine; Jay-Z – On To the Next One) and on Keys’ fourth album this new found love is apparent. On this EP, Keys has expanded her musical palette straying away from her traditional Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin-esque classic soul sound into a more futuristic synth-heavy sound, and the results have not disappointed.

The first single ‘ Doesn’t Mean Anything’ follows Keys’ traditional formula, acoustic piano and simple kick-snare-tambourine pattern along with a big sounding melodic chorus, and was lapped up by critics (as most Alicia Keys songs are). She collaborated with her usual ‘partner in crime’ Kerry ‘Krucial’ Brothers who helped pen previous hits ‘Superwoman’, ‘Karma’ and worldwide hit ‘No One’, so it was somewhat surprising that this song is Keys’ lowest charting single to date. This may be down to her heavily-processed vocals which partly remove the natural quality of Keys’ previous hits. However, despite this disappointment, the second single ‘Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart’ is incredible. So incredible, actually, I have even heard grown men singing it on the train (not very well, I must add). But once you hear it you won’t be surprised, this song is a collage of innovative, ground-breaking music past and present. The track opens with a cinematic synthesizer that sounds straight out of a Star Wars movie. Love interest Swizz Beatz’ influence is evident in a programmed drum & percussion pattern reminiscent of the old Run DMC, Public Enemy beats that Keys no doubt was exposed to growing up in the infamous ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ area of New York. An organ opens the first verse and continues throughout the verse in a chord progression that is easily the best we have heard in popular music since Ryan Tedder’s (OneRepublic) piano in Beyonce’s ‘Halo’. 808 & Heartbreak co-producer Jeff Bhasker then brings the same avant-garde creativity that made Kanye West’s album the masterpiece it was with an a 80’s synth that would shoot a plane out of the sky as Keys bellows “Tonight, i’m gonna find a way to make it, without you.” All these wide-ranging influences make this song an instant classic and it only gets better with every listen. The only thing missing is a Purple Rain-esque guitar solo, however (somewhat fittingly), Keys closes with a piano-vocal solo that not only shows off her finger-dexterity but also her vocal range.

Other gems off the album include another Swizz Beatz, Jeff Bhasker and Keys collaboration ‘Wait Til You See My Smile’ which is in a similar vein to ‘Sleeping with a Broken Heart’, synth-heavy with a booming drum pattern that comes in at the beginning of the second verse, and closes with Swizzy at his best with an incredible snare-tom-cymbal sequence. ‘Un-Thinkable’ is an epic ballad based on a man and woman’s first time getting intimate with backing vocals provided by 2009’s most promising act Drake. ‘Put it in a Love Song’ features the world’s biggest star Beyonce and opens more like a Beyonce-Swizz Beatz collaboration off 2007’s B’Day rather than a Keys song. However, the trademark Keys piano comes in and makes the song undeniably hers. Possibly a future hit, it has all the right ingredients. Darker themes are touched-upon in ‘Love Is Blind’, an ode to 1980’s Sade, a song in which Keys sings, over widely panned instrumental loops reminiscent of The Beatles albums when stereo mixing first began, “All of my friends think i’m crazy, but I don’t care. I’m over the edge, no turning back. Belong to you I swear.” On ‘Love is my Disease’, Keys again touches-upon the lack of control one feels when in love over a Caribbean sounding track. The remaining songs also reference love but in a more positive light, and it must be said, this album has no weak songs, they all carry a message described well due to great writing and production. However, not all the bases were covered, the natural soul feel of early Kanye West produced hit ‘You Don’t Know My Name’ is missing and it shows. Keys ultimately closes the album with her solo version of the Blueprint 3 hit ‘Empire State of Mind’. Fittingly it is Keys, with her loyal companion (her piano of course), proudly singing over light percussion about the city that made her who she is. In a contemporary music industry flooded with bubble gum songs that are instantly forgettable, there is atleast a few artists we can still bet the mortgage on to deliver fantastic albums. Keys is one of them. ‘Empire State of Mind (Part 2)’ ultimately builds into a triumphant harmony-filled, live drum, string and bass ending...

Let’s hear it for New York.

Chuck Berry, as great as he was, couldn’t do it. It took a few kids from Hollis, Queens to integrate MTV. It took a bunch of MCs from Brooklyn to integrate popular radio. It took hip-hop to the change the face of America. It changed racial politics. Kids in Beverly Hills now understand the plight of kids in Compton. It changed the way kids dressed in Brixton and Johannesburg. It gave a voice to the voiceless. It became so powerful, that it gave us the President of the United States. 100th Blog = Ciroc Vs Grey Goose

Dear Mr ‘That Kinda Party’

I am writing this letter as a formal response to what the, ‘100th That Kinda Party, post should be on. As momentous as the occassion is, I feel it should be seen as a celebration and what is a celebration without alcoholic beverages for social indulgence? With this in mind I have decided to make this post about the very crucial and much debated topic of Ciroc vs Grey Goose.

Now it would not be befitting for me to both applaud and critique both vodkas without doing in depth research. This undertaking has lead to my outgoings supersceding my in flows, as well as many long nights and shorter mornings, however I had to be dedicated to the cause. After the release ot the single, ‘BLAME IT’ by Jamie Foxx, Grey Goose became the most popular drink you could buy, assuming you attended clubs and bars that had enough swagger, (or SWAGGA as pronounced amongst the hip hop youth) to even sell the drink. I found that it was worth all the hype it had received and was genereally accepted by my liver without rejection, for fear of alcohol poisening. I enjoyed it most with a chaser, preferably cranberry, or when i really wanted to be wild, redbull. I also had it straight however i still felt that burn that is resented and feared by most when having a shot, and this made me question the statement by Grey Goose, ‘The Worlds Best Selling Vodka’. I mean if I wanted to feel a burn I would have just ordered tequilla and paid half the price for the shot.

I then turned my research to Ciroc Vodka which has been advertised mainly by hip hop legend Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. Straight away I was taken in by the look of the bottle, not saying Grey Goose did not have Swagga, however the elegance of Ciroc made it all that much tempting to taste its contents. Upon consumption I felt a delight that alcoholics rarely feel due to so a high alcohol intake. It was trully something new and foreign. When mixed with chaser, its presence was subtle however its effect imminant. However I was most taken by how smooth the shot was. When I say smooth I mean smoother than a babys bottom kind of smooth. I had to call the bar tender back and ask for my money back because I thought he had given me water with a twist by mistake. However, I ofcourse was mistaken and it had indeed been a straight up shot of Ciroc andas Mr Santana once said, ‘I indeed wanted to get another shot of that Ciroc in Me’. I did not have that usual scrunching up of my eyes in that moment of burn in my mouth, instead a steady transition from my lips to my stomach.

Without sounding too biast I decided to do a table to measure up the results and they are thus shown below: Please note all ratings are out of ten.

Going from the results it is my strongest opinion that Ciroc out classes Grey Goose, be it trying to celebrate an occassion, just a good night out or trying to impress in business or social situations, Ciroc will take you that much further and in my opinion is the reason business mogal Diddy got involved with it. For those who feel like the amount of times alcohol is distilled is just for advertising or certification, please know that you are terribly mistaken, there is a reason Ciroc tastes the way it does after having been distilled five, yes, five times, whilst Grey Goose is similar to Smirnoff vodka which is distilled a very average amount of times, three.

That said i hope that I have provided you with a captivating topic for your 100th post and can only hope that celebrations for it will be spent with bottles of Ciroc and not Grey Goose... however nothing stops you from having both clearly that would make it, ‘THAT KINDA PARTY’ JAMIE FOXX OR DIDDY..the choice is yours.

Chelsea have been banned by Fifa from signing any new players for an entire year.

The unprecedented punishment comes after world football's governing body judged them to have "induced" a young French player to breach his contract in order to move to the club last year.
Chelsea are expected to appeal the decision that blocks them from trading players in either of the next two transfer 'windows'.
The Premier League club will have to wait until January 2011 before adding new names to their lavishly-acquired squad.
FIFA's Dispute Resolution Chamber made the ruling after French club Lens complained teenage striker Gael Kakuta was encouraged to break his contract in order to move to London in 2008.
Chelsea and Kakuta were also hit with a joint £680,000 compensation fine.

In addition, Chelsea have been ordered to pay Lens £114,000 as a "training fee".
Kakuta, an 18-year-old France youth international, is also banned from playing any matches "worldwide" for four months.
Fifa's DRC clarified: "Chelsea are banned from registering any new players, either nationally or internationally, for the two next entire and consecutive registration periods following the notification of the present decision."
The club were deemed to have broken Article 17 paragraphs three and four of Fifa's Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players.
The rule reads: "It shall be presumed, unless established to the contrary, that any club signing a professional who has terminated his contract without just cause has induced that professional to commit a breach.
"The club shall be banned from registering any new players, either nationally or internationally, for two registration periods."

I Personally do not think Fifa will maintain this, this is jus tooooooo much and plus Roman Abramovich will make that whole fifa bored see fire, people will jus start having random accidents n shyt
